Monster Hunter Unite, Gran Turismo PSP - Online Multiplayer via PlayStation 3 adhocParty

Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 3's "adhocParty" functionality will debut in North America later this month, allowing those that own both a PlayStation 3 and PSP to play portable games like Gran Turismo PSP and Monster Hunter Freedom online.

Supporting only certain titles, the adhocParty service essentially transforms the PlayStation 3 into an online access point, which then enables the ad hoc multiplayer of compatible PSP games to be played across the internet instead of locally.

Sony is billing adhocParty as a "new social gaming service," with Capcom North America and Europe's COO Mark Beaumont noting that "at last, Monster Hunter fans will be able to adventure together, regardless of where they are in North America."

LittleBigPlanet PSP Jam Session Winners Announced

Sony recently held a competition at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. This "Jam Session" for LittleBigPlanet PSP challenged creators to make awesome LBP levels featuring San Francisco architectural landmarks. At the end of the two day contest, only one team would win.

The five landmark entries included Alcatraz, Coit Tower, Golden Gate Bridge, Powell Street and Cable Cars, and the Victorian neighborhoods. The winners of the contest are Nathan Bryan, Desiree Ong, and Doanna Neville of the Powell Street and Cable Cars. For their prize, they will each receive a PSP Go, a copy of LBP PSP, and their level will be a featured level when the game launches. The rest of the competitors will each receive a copy of LBP PSP.

adhocParty Coming Soon to PSP

Adhoc multiplayer mode won't be the bane of PSP owners who want the global reach of infrastructure mode anymore. If they have PS3s, that is. Sony has finally announced that Adhoc Party is coming to North America.

For those who haven't heard of it, Adhoc Party is a free PS3 app that lets PSP owners connect to a PS3 through Wi-Fi and play adhoc-only games over the Internet. Can't find companions nearby for a Monster Hunter run? With Adhoc Party, you can look for party members from halfway 'round the globe.

The app also supports voice chat if you have a PlayStation Eye wireless headset.

The only thing that puts a damper in the festivities is that apart from saying that it's coming soon, Sony hasn't revealed a launch date yet. Still, great news. It's about damn time that they announce this, really, what with the number of big adhoc-only PSP games that have come out (and are about to come out).
